Well it was a very snowy mothers day yesterday here at the farm. Can you believe it? At times it was blizzard like conditions and even the ducks were confused! Figgy our 'retired' newf even went out for a walk to try and see where all the white stuff was coming from! It buried the winter wheat in a blanket of snow that is thankfully melting this morning! The ducks who have all started nesting all over the farm were having trouble getting to the nests to sit so who knows how the hatch will turn out now!! We'll keep you posted though! Things were lovely and warm in the geodome however and I did spend part of the day seeding and tending to the seedlings in the warm and cozy garden dome! The corn is already 6" high and I can't wait for it to be ready!! I will post some pictures of the dome grow shortly! Have a happy hoppy day everyone!!
Spring has finally sprung at the farm after what seemed like a never ending winter! All the ducks have 'broken free' from their winter pens and are happily wandering around the yard hissing , quacking , making nests and laying eggs for what I hope will be a very good hatch! We will see in about 45 days or so! The laying hens have also finished their spring molt and are all back to laying so there is plenty of eggs for everyone again! Come on out and get a dozen or two!!You can't beat the taste of a farm fresh free range egg! We also have duck eggs for sale and if you have never tried one you don't know what your missing!! They are the biggest and yummiest egg you'll ever eat!! Come on out for brunch and we'll prove it to you! The Buns are pretty happy too because the "bunnymower" is back in action every day cutting grass for the evening feed in the barn. If you can't get the bunnies to the grass.......bring the grass to the bunnies!!! Dandelions make a great spring detox not just for us but for bunnies too! It helps them to expel any extra calcium they have been holding on to all winter. We have also had a few other visitors to the farm, some more welcome than others!! Here is a shot of a curious onlooker who I had to persuade to 'move along' last week!! Sure glad Figgy or Shadow(our Newfs) didn't spot this little guy! I might have had a fight on my hands! On a more welcome note the barn swallows have returned and are zooming in and out of the barn , revamping their old nests and getting ready to lay their eggs.We encourage the swallows to stay and even have a small entry door up high on the wall that is just for them! They eat lots of flying insects in and around the barn that tend to pester our bunnies!! Every day there are new baby buns in the barn now and we have kits at all ages and stages!! It's a busy time about the property cleaning up and getting the gardens ready for the season. Hey , if anyone has a few extra 'winter pounds ' they would like to shed before the bathing suit season gets here , I've got a great "rake and wheelbarrow workout " for you!! Cheers all! Merry be !! See you at sunrise!!
